Standard wine bottles work especially well because their glass is thick enough to handle the warmth and their shape gives the finished piece good balance. Avoid very thin or decorative glass, which can react quite poorly to temperature changes.

1. Start Your First Candle

Light one of our Hippy Drippy Drip Candles and hold it sideways so the flame sits about an inch above the bottle's mouth. Tilt it gently until a few drops of melted wax fall onto the rim. While the wax is still soft, turn the candle upright and press its base into the bottle opening. Hold it steady for about thirty seconds. The small pool of wax you just created will act like glue and lock the candle in place. 

2. Let the Dripping Begin in a Steady Spot

These candles are made with an off-center wick, so the flame melts wax on one side more than the other. That's what sends the desired streams of colorful wax down the glass. The process works best when the air around it is calm, so avoid any strong drafts from windows, fans, or air vents. If your space tends to be cool, the wax may flow a little slower at first; that is normal and actually helps the layers build.

3. Add New Colors for Depth and Interest

Each candle burns for roughly twenty minutes, so when the flame shrinks to a small puddle at the mouth of the bottle, it is time for the next one. Light a fresh candle from the existing flame, then set the base of the new candle right onto that small flame. The old flame goes out as the new wax melts and seals everything together. Hold the new candle steady for half a minute while the connection hardens.

Now you can start layering colors. Plan a sequence ahead of time and a good place to start is:

1. a deep base color first
2. brighter tones that will drip over it, or
3. a gradual shift from one hue to another for a sunset effect.

Rotate the bottle a quarter turn every ten minutes or so if you notice the drips favoring one side.
